Meet Jo – Our Liability Underwriting Manager…

I wasn’t actively looking for another job but was approached directly by Steve. I felt flattered and I have worked with Paul Bennett previously and always rated him, so agreed for an unofficial chat.
The role sounded like an exciting opportunity, and I accepted.
I have been here 5 months now and I am not disappointed. I was made to feel welcome from day 1. Everyone is happy to help and eager to learn. We are extremely busy as we are one of the fastest growing MGAs in the country, but we still have time to be friendly to each other and have a laugh. It is a great atmosphere. Wellbeing is at the centre and the company strive to keep us happy and motivated in all we do.
I have over 30 years’ experience, working in many areas of insurance including Underwriting, Claims and Broking – Personal lines, Motor Trade, Hire & Reward, Commercial and Casualty inc Construction, at both SME and Corporate level.
I qualified as ACII and Chartered Insurer just before I turned 50. I had set myself a target to complete the ACII before I turned 50 – a last minute decision! This meant I had to take 6 exams in 6 months (to be fair 3 were multiple choice). I am glad that it is out of the way now – looking back I have no idea where I found the time required, my husband was a great help though and made me flash cards and we had quizzes etc.
My new role at NBS is Liability Underwriting Manager. NBS are committed to training and developing the team and part of my role is to share my experience and knowledge.
As Liability manager I am looking at new Products that we feel would assist the brokers, particularly in the hard market, when capacity is being reduced, rates increasing, and products withdrawn.
We have recently launched a new Product – Combined Liabilities for Contractors and the response has been great – it is keeping myself and my colleagues busy!
Typical trades are:
– Blind Installations
– Block Laying
– Building Contractors
– Carpentry Contractors
– Carpet Fitters

– Dry Lining Contractors
– Fencing Contractors
– Flooring Contractors

– Guttering and PVC Fascia and Sofit Contractors
– Interior Design and Decorating Contractor
– Office/kitchen Contractors
– Paving and Kerbing Contractor
– Plastering Contractors
– Plumbing and Heating Contractor
– Property Developers
– Property Maintenance
– Shop Fitting Contractors
– Stone Mason
– Tiling Contractors
– Window and Glass Installation
The more info you provide the better, there is a space for additional information just after the declaration, including information on accreditations, how long established, stable workforce, RAMS H&S etc provides us with the opportunity to discount the rates further for you – we want to help you retain/convert the business, our aim is to make your life easier.
If you have any queries on the product, please contact me at joanne.jepson@nbsunderwriting.co.uk
We are always looking for further opportunities to help our brokers, so keep watching this space.
I look forward to working with you to assist in building your book of business in 2022 and after.
