Reducing Public Liability Claims in Pubs and Nightclubs

NBS Underwriting

29 September 2025

Running a pub or nightclub comes with unique challenges, and protecting both customers and staff is always a top priority. Recent claims data highlights a clear trend: while the number of incidents has reduced, the average cost of public liability claims has doubled since 2021.

This makes proactive risk management more important than ever. By addressing common causes of accidents – in particular falls downstairs, which account for 17% of all claims – business owners can create safer environments, protect their reputation, and reduce the likelihood of a claim arising in the first place.

What the Data Shows

Our review of the pub and nightclub account shows the following key insights:

Average public liability claim in 2025:

  • Pubs: £20,882
  • Nightclubs: £10,007

Both averages have doubled since 2021.

While claims frequency has reduced, the value of each claim has risen sharply.

This demonstrates the growing importance of prevention. Even a single incident can have significant consequences, so reducing the risk is in every venue’s best interest.

The Leading Cause of Claims

Over the past five years, the largest single cause of public liability claims in pubs and nightclubs has been falls downstairs, representing 17% of all cases.

In this sector, the risk is heightened by the nature of the environment: venues are often busy, lighting may be low, and customers who have consumed alcohol are naturally more susceptible to slips, trips, and falls. While these factors can’t be eliminated, they can be effectively managed with the right precautions in place.

Practical Steps for Risk Reduction

Brokers can support their clients by highlighting straightforward steps that make stairways safer:

  • Ensure stairways are well lit at all times.
  • Fit bannisters on both sides for stability.
  • Use non-slip coverings on stair surfaces.
  • Add step highlights or contrasting strips for clear visual cues.
  • Maintain CCTV coverage to monitor stair areas.
  • Regularly check carpeted stairs for wear, rips, or loose edges.

These measures are often low-cost but highly effective in preventing accidents. They not only help protect customers but also demonstrate that the venue is taking reasonable steps to manage risks responsibly.
